Weekend activities:
We have prepared activities during the weekend, which are free to join for the course participants (students and teachers!).
Saturday: City tour & Pizza
Welcome to Tromsø! This vibrant little town with a metropole heart has been a hub in the North for a couple of centuries, and its roots and traditions go much deeper. A guided tour around the oldest parts of town will give you an insight in how Tromsø came to be, the people living here and their struggles for survival. Be prepared for war, darkness and disease as well as dinners, dance and fine entertainment when Per Helge Nylund from the Arctic University Museum takes us along for a history walk.
Start: Skansen, at 13.00
Yonas pizza is a Tromsø staple, notably with its peculiar, cabbage-topped Tako pizza and their generous toppings.
Sunday: Bus tour to Hillesøy
Hillesøy is a small island around 60km east of Tromsø facing the open Norwegian Sea and home to a small fishing village. The white strand beaches and scenery make it a popular tourist destination together with the island of Sommarøy. Håja, the island rumored to be behind the design of the Ishavkatedralen, can be seen from Hillesøy/Sommarøy.
Start: UiT, at 10.00
We will meet the bus by the MIX-kiosk at UiT and depart at 10.00. The drive to Hillesøy should take about 1h30 minutes, and the bus will let us by the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel. From there, two hikes are possible:
We will eat lunch between 12 and 14 at the hotel restaurant, and will go back to Tromsø before 18.
