Course content

The course covers numerical modelling and simulation techniques for structural mechanics and fluid mechanics/heat transfer. Candidates will learn about structures problem and simulation techniques with the use of Finite Element Methods (FEM). Similarly, candidates will learn about fluid mechanics/heat transfer problems with the use of Finite Volume Methods and Finite Difference Methods (FVM / FDM). In both, candidates will learn about governing equations, discretization techniques, initial & boundary conditions, and numerical solving techniques. They will also learn ANSYS® and MATLAB® software.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge:

  • Candidates will learn the basics of numerical modelling and simulation and acquire important knowledge about setting up one.
  • Candidates will learn certain advanced concepts in relation to the mechanics of materials and fluid mechanics/heat transfer.

Skills:

  • Candidates will understand the term numerical modelling and simulation and its relation to practical problems.
  • Candidates will build knowledge in discretization techniques used in Multiphysics simulations such as Finite Element Method (FEM), Finite Difference Method (FDM), Finite Volume Method (FVM), etc.
  • Candidates will discretize the partial differential equations (PDE) of structures, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
  • Candidates will apply the correct boundary and initial conditions in solving the numerical modelling and simulation problems.
  • Candidates will also learn about the use of computational resources in solving numerical modelling and simulation problems.

General Competence:

  • Candidates will be able to appreciate the importance of numerical modelling and simulation for engineering applications.
  • Candidates will also build an understanding of the margin of error between real cases to simulated ones.
