MDA-1021 Introduction to media production - 10 ECTS

Mandatory course in the 1-year Program for Media Studies.

Offered as a single course for exchange students.

Course content

The course introduces still photography, audio production, and video production, with learning taking place through frequent practical assignments and thorough evaluations.

We work on productions in a variety of genres: from portrait photography to interview podcasts, and all the way to short documentary and fiction productions. Versatility is essential in a media production environment that demands the ability to work across different genres and multiple media platforms.

We use both mobile phones and professional equipment for our productions, while post-production is done using professional software.


Objectives of the course

The students have the following learning outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE

The student:

  • has basic knowledge of the technological foundation for the production of sound and images
  • has basic knowledge of digital media production technology and the equipment used

SKILLS

The student:

  • can plan and execute simple productions of still images, sound, and video
  • can reflect on and justify their choices in the planning and production of still images, sound, and video

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The student:

  • can contribute to media production practices effectively through the exchange of viewpoints and experiences

Language of instruction and examination

Language of instruction is English.

Work requirements and exams may be done in either English or Norwegian.


Teaching methods

Intensive session-based with online support (3 on-campus sessions, 1 digital session).

Supervised work with practical exercises, lectures, and seminars/webinars

Mandatory production assignments with accompanying reflection notes are improved within the constraints outlined in the assignment texts, and submitted as a portfolio.

Re-sit examination

A re-sit exam is arranged for students who did not pass the most recent regular exam in this course. A portfolio that has not been approved may be resubmitted for reassessment in a revised form.
