Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:
Around 75% of women will experience a vaginal infection that if left untreated may lead to serious long-term complications. Despite being so common, these infections can be difficult to treat as today’s treatment options are often limited and may be ineffective. This is a neglected area of healthcare in serious need of new treatment options.
To address this, we looked at pharmaceutical technology to improve treatment. Using this strategy to combine lipids from soy and chitosan from shrimp shells, we developed formulations that could adhere to the vaginal wall, reducing the need for frequent reapplication. This not only simplifies treatment, but when we combined it with polyphenols, nature’s own antifungal compounds, we found that the formulations targeted fungal yeast, potentially improving treatment outcomes for the common yeast infection.
This pharmaceutical approach may provide more practical, improved options for the future treatment of vaginal infections.
