Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:
When men enter prison, their social ties are disrupted, and daily life is reshaped by isolation and strict routines. We interviewed 15 men in three prisons in Northern Norway to learn how they understand and manage mental health needs. They described the transition from freedom to prison as highly stressful. Because contact with family and friends is limited, peers become their primary source of support—yet mistrust and long hours of lock-up reduce opportunities to form social ties. Most participants felt their mental health problems stemmed from external prison stressors, and this influenced their coping. They preferred exercise and meaningful activities to medication, except for ADHD treatment. High thresholds for accessing services and doubts about confidentiality kept many from seeking professional help. The study’s conceptual model illustrates that access to better health information, stronger peer networks, and a health-promoting environment can enhance well-being and rehabilitation outcomes.
