The next World Cafe will be hosted on 2 June by Tarsh Bates, Lena Leimgruber Haraldsson, and Alana Vincent from Ubmeje (after more than 14 years of lobbying, the Umesami name Ubmeje is now an official name for Umeå).
The theme is olfactory ecologies, based on Tarsh's artistic research. In the spirit of artistic research, there is an activity and then some questions for discussion:
Eco-scent mapping:
Draw or write about up to three eco-scents that hold significance for you. They could be:
-
A scent connected to an environment that offers you comfort or well-being or that you particularly dislike
- A scent linked to environments connected to your cultural heritage or identity
-
A smell associated with a particular environment or place that matters to you.
-
A more-than-human olfactory relation that matters to you (e.g. pollinators and flowers)
Imagine we are in the year 2050, nearly 25 years into the future. Return to your scents and consider:
Draw or write about how you imagine these future scents.
If you want to challenge yourself, imagine we are in the year 2090. Consider the same questions.
Happy smelling!
