This qualitative study, based on in-depth interviews and a document analysis of Norwegian and international strategy documents, examines how small and medium-sized nature-based tourism businesses in Alta, Northern Norway, adapted to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights their use of financial measures, government aid, a shift to local tourism markets, and tailored product offerings to navigate disruptions. The research emphasizes the importance of resilience, sustainability, and extensive cooperation, showing how community integration played a key role in fostering adaptability. Furthermore, it explores how these strategies align with national and global sustainability goals, demonstrating how local actions contribute to broader environmental and societal objectives. The findings reveal that proactive, cooperative, and adaptive practices not only helped these businesses survive the pandemic but also positioned them for long-term sustainable operations. This study underscores the critical role of collaboration and adaptability in ensuring the resilience of tourism businesses during crises.
