Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:
The provision of health services is determined by knowledge, politics, leadership and economics. In 2016, a political decision led to the establishment of a medication free treatment ward for people with severe mental illness, sparking both praise and debate in terms of resources, safety and soundness.
In 2021/2022, we conducted a qualitative study with 19 interviews of patients and 20 interviews with clinicians, using text condensation. Our aim was to explore the expectations and experiences of these groups regarding this treatment.
Life experiences, particularly the unwanted side effects of antipsychotic medication, drove people to seek this treatment. A common thread was the importance of personal motivation, frameworks, and empowerment.
The study offers insight into the complex treatment experiences and motivations of persons with severe mental illness, contributing to the scientific and societal discussion on the provision and delivery of health services.
