Carmel Cefai, Professor of Psychology, University of Malta.
Children and young people in Europe and other parts of the world, are growing up in a rapidly changing social, economic, and technological environment, exposed to multiple stressors, which impact their academic learning as well as their wellbeing, and mental health, with recent conflicts exacerbating an already challenging climate. This study undertook a nationwide assessment of the social and emotional wellbeing and academic learning of school children in Malta from kindergarten to secondary school. It identified the status and average levels of school children’s social, emotional competencies, academic learning competences and emotional and behaviour concerns, the percentages of students exhibiting such competences or concerns at common developmental levels, and how these levels varied by students’ gender, grade level, and sector. Data was collected from 1023 students, 1416 parents and 148 teachers (reporting on 653 students) from 59 state and church schools in Malta. The results of the study paint a multifaceted picture of strengths and areas for growth in children and adolescents, with a particular focus on the need to address the emotional challenges faced by children and young people in the post COVID era.
Coffee and fruit will be served.
