Insurance & health matters - international students

This page provides essential health and insurance guidance for international students at UiT, including inbound exchange, joint-degree, and full-degree students. It outlines requirements and recommendations for insurance, health services, and mandatory screenings.
- UiT The Arctic University of Norway does not provide insurance for accident, liability, health, or travel.
- All international students must arrange adequate insurance coverage before departure and/or arrival in Norway, including:
- Theft and loss
- Illness and liability
- Emergency travel home (e.g. due to serious illness or force majeure)
- Nordic Citizens: Covered under the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme if registered in the National Population Register.
- EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens: Must bring a European Health Insurance Card or private medical insurance.
- Non-EU/EEA Citizens:
- Stay less than 3 months: Must bring insurance from home country.
- Stay 3–12 months: May apply for voluntary membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme (NAV), but processing time takes ~6 months.
- Stay more than 12 months: Automatically eligible for membership after Registering with the police and receiving a Norwegian ID number ("personnummer").
Note: Membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme (Folketrygden) only covers healthcare within Norway, not during travel or abroad. Dental care and pre-existing conditions are not covered.
- Tuberculosis (TB): Required for students from high-endemic countries or those who have stayed in such areas for over 3 months. Must be completed within 4 weeks of arrival.
- After registering your arrival in Norway with the local police, you may receive a letter from the health authorities if you are arriving from an endemic country. Please ensure your name is clearly marked on your post box in Norway, and carefully read the letter you receive. If you need assistance understanding the contents, you are welcome to contact the Student Counselling Centre listed in the section below.
- MRSA & TB (Clinical Practice Students):
- MRSA testing must be done before departure and again upon arrival.
- Students must avoid hospitals after testing until arrival in Norway.
- A self-declaration form must be submitted before attending clinical classes.
Vaccination centres

- Dental Care: Privatised and expensive; not covered by national insurance. The Student Counselling Centre, administered by the Arctic Student Welfare Organisation, provides a counselling service for Norwegian and international students on campus.
Experienced professionals are available to help students cope with the personal and practical challenges of student life. Studying far from home in a foreign country can be particularly challenging. You will be required to adapt to a new culture and different social behaviours and expectations.
