“Development of solutions for health monitoring of concrete bridges” Case, Dynamic Analysis of Skattørsund Bridge

Skattørsundet Bru

About:

The Skattørsundet Bridge is a concrete slab bridge that link the islands of Kågen and Skjervøy in Troms, Norway. Measuring 804 meters in length, the bridge's longest span extends 32 meters. Opened in 1971, the bridge is an integral part of County Road 866, and it provides a crucial connection between Skjervøy and the mainland. Recent inspections have identified that the bridge need maintenance and new monitoring systems to better plan the operation and maintenance routines with the main goal to extend the lifespan of the bridge. This case constitutes an excellent case study to try to improve practice of structural assessment of existing structures with a focus on dynamic analysis. As a result, it could lead to better structural assessment procedures and designing of permanent structural health monitoring systems for the bridges.

Project Goals:

  • Gather all the details and reports about current state of the bridge.
  • Perform dynamic analysis of bridge using accelerometers.
  • Identify dynamic behavior of the structure, that is mode shape and mode frequencies.
  • Identify the most effective layout for long term monitoring.
  • Calibrating the Finite Element Model/ finite element model updating.

Partners:

  • Tromsø Fylkeskommune (TFK)
  • The Artic University of Norway (UiT)
  • SINTEF Narvik
  • Wise Technologies (Italy)

Work Packages:

  • WP1: Current state of the bridge
  • WP2: Dynamic analysis of the bridge
  • WP3: Project administration, publicity and reporting
  • WP4: Definition and decision for installation permanent condition monitoring system
